 逃出後，先到薩隆尼卡，再乘船到義大利，目標是遙遠的北方……千萬不能被逮到，一定要找到相片中的女士……大衛幼年即被關入東歐的集中營〈但他並不是猶太人〉。十二歲這一年，他莫名得到一個人的幫助，逃出了集中營。他連自己是誰都搞不清楚，只知道幫他的人要他逃向北方，一個叫丹麥的國家。逃亡路程從薩隆尼卡開始，接著渡海到義大利，展開一場歐洲大陸的漂泊之旅……旅程中，大衛發現自己的自由意志─他與生俱來卻被剝奪多年的天性─正漸漸甦醒。逃亡的孤獨與恐懼一度使他徹底絕望，卻在生平第一次瞭望義大利美景時，產生了活下去的渴望……途中一些好心人的幫助，例如船上的義大利水手、少女瑪莉亞和她的父母，及喜歡畫畫的女士等人，是他歷險中莫大的依靠。然而，當他陷入惡人之手，唯有摯友約翰尼斯曾唸給他聽的美麗詩句安慰他：「祂使我躺臥在青草地上，領我在可安歇的水邊。」另外，還有一隻極聰明的牧羊犬，對他付出最大的友誼與忠誠……
